Joel Feldman is passionate about striving to create something good out of the tragedy that changed his family forever, “Casey died because a driver took his eyes off the road for just a few seconds. And after it happened, I knew I could easily have been that driver. I had driven while distracted many times. And it took losing Casey for me to realize how lucky I was not to have killed another family’s child, spouse, parent, or friend.”

The internet is a powerful device that can help us honor Casey’s memory by making people think twice about making driving a secondary task. By taking a second out of your day to share a link, you could make people think twice before taking their eyes off the wheel for a critical split second.

My Gallons is in the news again as gas reaches $4 a gallon gas across the nation. With 13 states now reporting $4 a gallon gas it is impossible to avoid noticing the cost of gas.

Mygallons.com is a service that lets you purchase gas at current rates, and lock in that price for future fill ups. Your price per gallon is calculated based on an average price in your local region. Based on this price you can prepay for 100 gallons at $4.00 a gallon. Then you cash in that prepaid gas gallons when the price of gas goes up. MyGallons was introduced in 2008 and became Google’s top searched phrase the first week of July 2008 with the flood of media attention it received.

There had been a lot of speculation across the internet about how much money you can actually save using MyGallons. The debate came to a screeching halt with release of an article done by the LA Times in 2008. The article discusses the F rating given to the company by the Better Business Bureau due to a problem that their partner, Voyager, who was set to process the company’s transactions at the pumps dropped unexpectedly. My Gallon’s refunded the 6000 initial card holders their $30 start up fee, until they could reissue these 6000 early adopters with a free card later that year.

There is hope for consumers to save money!

Since 2008, the BBB changed their rating of the company back up to a B (the best rating a young company can earn). My Gallon’s has replace their credit card processing company Voyager and is again available to help consumers save on their gas purchases.

Whether you’re a law firm, a manufacturing company, or a solo entrepreneur, video marketing can work for you in several ways. Find various ways to reach your targeted audience and you’ll reach more of them. Read on for tips and information that will help you leverage the power of YouTube and video marketing for your website and your search engine optimization efforts.

Post Videos on YouTube

YouTube receives millions of visitors. Some are looking for entertainment, some are looking for something specific, and some arrive because search engines listed a video as an answer to a query they had. At Envoca Design, one of our clients created a law YouTube video channel and published 17 legal introduction videos answering common questions about PA car accident law. In just the first 6 months each video had an average of 30 views. Many of those views clicked through to the client’s website for help or further information. Videos can boost your reputation and your brand by being syndicated on sites such as YouTube. People who find your videos may watch other videos, may syndicate your videos on their website (giving you even more exposure) and could subscribe to your video channel so that they can see future videos you make.

Tip: Take the time to categorize your videos. Don’t forget to add relevant keyword phrases to the keyword fields as well. Use keywords that you want to rank for.

Post Videos on Your Website

Web design experts will tell you that photos can make a good website great. Well, videos can make a great website fantastic. Videos offer a great way to really connect with your visitors. Sure, your design, your web copy, and your testimonials can make an impression but having videos can help you put a face and a professional image to that website. Your home page or “About” page could contain videos that introduce your firm to prospective customers. And, your blog could contain useful and helpful videos. The videos you post on YouTube can easily be posted on your website as well. Adding multimedia to your site could make a dramatic impact and really engage your visitors. People won’t always read a 5,000 word long sales letter telling why your product or service is worth buying but you can pack a lot of information into a quick video! Clients can send you video testimonials, you can create video case studies, interviews, demonstrations, and infomercials that could be used in multiple ways.

Tip: Promote Your Videos. Beyond posting videos to YouTube and to your website or blog, videos make great material for social marketing as well. You can post links to your videos on your Facebook page, your Twitter, feed, and on other social profiles, too. Link to them in blogs and articles as well.

More Video Marketing Tips:

Professional and casual videos can both be helpful. Take a look at competitors in your industry who are using video marketing to get ideas of what you can do and use that info to help inspire you to fill gaps that your competitors have left as well.

Get professional help with your videos, especially if they’re used as marketing pieces. You can have professional scripts written, have them filmed professionally, and work with a search engine marketing company who can help you get the most mileage out of them through social media.

Don’t use video in lieu of all other online marketing efforts. Integrate it into your overall marketing and branding strategy.

Monitor and respond to comments on the videos you publish. There could be great opportunities to further demonstrate your expertise or capture a new sales lead this way.

Make sure you analyze traffic from your videos so you can leverage the intelligence you gather to continually improve traffic, social networking efforts, and branding. If you need help, contact Envoca Design.

It’s no secret that I am a bit of a twitter fanboy and have been using the service since it’s early beginnings. However there are still a few mistakes that I see users, both old and new, making on a regular basis. So I have compiled a list of the seven most common faux pas that that users commit on the popular social network.

1. Constant Self Promotion

Everybody who has used twitter knows this guy. Whether it’s another “Social Media Consultant” schlepping their services or the corporate big wig tooting his own horn, bragging is not a form of communication. Twitter is all about sharing thoughts and conversation. Constantly trying to make yourself look important is not only egotistical, it’s one of the quickest ways to get yourself ignored.

Instead try…

Promoting a product or service is ok when appropriate. People do go on twitter to learn about the latest and greatest developments in their field of interest and how to purchase accordingly. So try using what they call in the radio business a “plug“. A talk show host that does nothing but brag or sell is basically an infomercial. Real talk show hosts will usually only mention something that they are promoting towards the end of an interview and usually only when it is related to what they are talking about.

2. Rants

Once in a while, everybody needs a good rant. The problem with using a micro-blogging service like twitter is that it is more turned for conversations presented as bullet points. Therefore, not only is it hard to express yourself completely, but you also run a greater risk of being misunderstood.

Instead try…

Blogging is the perfect medium for this kind of thing. When you own your own blog, you make the rules. Whether it’s politics, frustrations at work, or relationships, blogging is the perfect venue for expressing yourself thoroughly. If you don’t own a blog but would like to try it out, you might want to check out my earlier post comparing the most popular blogging platforms out there. (You see there how I appropriately used a “plug”?)

3. Automated Direct Messages

About every day I get two direct messages without exception. One of them usually says “I just added you to my Mafia Family…”. The other one usually says “Thanks for the follow. Now check out my blog at http://IAmASocialLeper.com/…” Both of these are 100% unacceptable. Also, I’m pretty sure that nobody has ever genuinely felt gratitude for gaining a twitter follower. This is the #1 rule that I see being broken by supposed “Social Media Experts” that believe that automated messages are a form of conversation.

Instead try…

If you want to talk to someone outside of the public view use the direct message feature to make that happen. Most of the times that I use it is when I am giving someone my personal contact info so that they can call or email me. Twitter was never really made for keeping secrets.

4. Overly Person Information

I have seen this happen more times than I would like to admit and it should be the most self-explanatory of my rules listed here.

Instead try…

As a rule, I try to only communicate things on twitter that I could be comfortable saying around both my family and my coworkers. Topics such a recreational activities, hobbies, food, and family functions are all ok and should actually be encouraged.

5. Excessive Professionalism

At the same time, topics of an exorbitant formality or dryness are actually not appropriate. I would never go home and talk to my family about a Q4 earning report or how the market saturation of SEO consultants has far passed maturity so twitter is usually not a good place to throw out that kind of water cooler talk.

Instead try…

If you are tweeting about an organization or business, try posting content that is more newsworthy than water cooler gossip but less than press release news (new hires, expanding offices, business trips, company/personal events). A lot of times, companies do things on a regular basis that they consider boring. These things are often fascinating to the outside world.

6. Chronic Repetition

This is the drug of choice of a lot of online retailers. I once saw a twitter profile of a business card printing company that had manually tweeted a link to their homepage, with different accompanying text, over 200 times in one day. Once again, this is an obvious turnoff to potential customers. However, it wouldn’t have made it to my list if I didn’t see this all the time.

Instead try…

Try to use twitter more to tell a story. Use it to talk about some of the cool features of your product, how your product is made, or how your product compares to the competition. Chances are, if you have a website, it already has multiple pages of content that you can use as conversation starters. A lot of this just comes down to good salesmanship and public relations.

7. Firehosing Tweets

This is basically what I would call spamming or anything that comes close to it (see the image at right). Unfortunately twitter is still possibly the easiest platform to spam in the history of the internet. Unlike other mediums such as Facebook or YouTube, any novice with no knowledge of programming can start spamming twitter quite successfully. While this can generate marginal amounts of unqualified traffic, the long term damage it can have on your brand is often irreparable.

Instead try…

The trick here is not even getting close to what the average user might consider spam. While I don’t condone automated tweets in general, every tweet that you push should have some actual value to somebody. Just using twitter to generate junk traffic to your website is never a viable strategy in the long run.

The bottom line is, never do anything on twitter that will compromise your reputation or that of the company that you represent. While I consider tweeting a kind of accelerated form of human interaction, it is important to stay in control of the message that you are presenting. If you would like to talk about this more, feel free to start a conversation with me about it on twitter.

These include mini-sites for one- time promotions, company blogs, separate sites for non-profit branches of a company, and so forth. Often the question comes up of whether we can leverage these separate sites for SEO value by interlinking them together.

The answer to this question is yes but explaining the actual value is much more difficult. The short answer is that Google almost always knows when two or more sites are owned by the same person. In fact, it is actually very difficult for the owner of two or more sites to hide the fact that they are owned by the same person or organization. Therefore, the value you get from linking two of your own sites together is much less than the value you get from a link from an external site.

That being said, I still recommend interlinking sites to almost all of our clients with multiple web properties. I have embedded an excellent video of this concept being explained to a little greater extent by SEO heavyweight Rand Fishkin. Although in the past I have mentioned a few of the free tools that I use, I thought it would be a good time to compile a list of some of the better SaaS tools that I have been using over the last year. This list is exhaustive but rather some of my favorites. The following are listed in no particular order.

AddThis

Ever notice those little icons on most websites that say something like “share this of Facebook” or “Email this article to a friend”? Well, for people that build websites, actually coding buttons like those from scratch can be a lot of work. So to save website owners time a company called AddThis has created a very versatile and easy to use set of tools that allow you to add social sharing tools to a website with minimal work and no hand coding. Granted there are many companies doing similar things in this field right now but AddThis is my current favorite due to their versatility, ease of use, and professorial tracking software that all comes built in with the service. All for free.

Google Analytics

Speaking of tracking, this list could not be complete without mentioning Google Analytics. Practically every site that we build here at envoca has analytics installed so that we can track the number of users we are getting to our sites, where they are coming in, where they are leaving, and how they are spending there time. Although Google analytics hasn’t changed much in the last 3 years or so, it still remains a swiss army knife of a tool for people that want to track their website’s visitios without spending a lot of money on similar products.

Microsoft WebsiteSpark

A little over a year ago, when Microsoft first announced their BizSpark program. I kind of thought that they were a little crazy because they basically said that they were going to be giving free software to small companies for a three year period. Some people might not find that strange. However when you stop and think about it, that’s actually thousands of dollars of their own software for each company that they are giving out like candy on Halloween. Buying software can be a crippling cost for small companies just starting out and Microsoft has decided to help put. Soon after came similar programs DreamSpark and WebsiteSpark, the latter being specifically for web development companies like ours.

Aviary

Aviary is a company that is new to me for this year. they produce a suite of free image an audio editors that all work right in your computer’s browser. A stark contrast from the slow and expensive software programs that professionals like us have been using for years. While I wouldn’t recommend their Phoenix or Falcon Image editors over Photoshop any time soon, I would recommend their products to the aspiring young student looking to get their feet wet in the web design game. This will definetly be a company to keep an eye on in the next year or two.

Bitly Pro

Another great product in a sea of competitors that just don’t seem to be as good, Bitly has a great offering in their pro service that launched this last year. For those of you that are following us on twitter you might have noticed that although our website address is “envoca.com”, we occasionally post links that start with “envo.ca”. This is thanks to Bitly’s pro URL shortener service that allows us to use our own short URL when we want to post a shortened link on twitter. This service is also free currently and is noticeably much more reliable than their competitors.

There are several others such as WordPress or Hootsuite that I would add to this list if I wanted to be more exhaustive but I have written about most of them at some point before. So what are your favorite free tools of the trade? Let us know in the comments below.
